When we eat more simply, others can simply eat. 75% of the fund collected for CRS Rice Bowl benefit food programs of Catholic Relief Services throughout the world. 25% remains in the Diocese of San Jose and provides grants to parish programs that feed the hungry.
Get Started
Beginning Ash Wednesday and throughout Lent, you may pick up a rice bowl box at any Mass. Or just use a jar or shoebox to collect your donations to get started. Each Rice Bowl box includes recipes and an activity calendar for Lent. Try to do something daily with the spiritual pillars of Lent: praying, fasting and almsgiving.
Pray
During the 40 days of Lent learn about the communities where CRS is at work. Reflect and pray with your family on how you can help those who hunger. Pray the Stations of the Cross with CRS using this booklet or videos.
Fast
Prepare simple, meatless meals each Friday and explore other cultures from your kitchen. Through the stories, you’ll learn about the principles of Catholic social teaching—and ways to put them into action during Lent and beyond.
Give
All during Lent -- Ash Wednesday through Holy Thursday -- collect your Lenten monetary sacrifices into your Rice Bowl box, shoebox or jar, to donate at the end of Lent.
At the End of Lent
Donations may be turned in online, at Mass, or by mailing a check to the parish office. Checks should be made payable to St Nicholas & St William Parish with "CRS Rice Bowl" on the memo line.
